SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man died after becoming unresponsive shortly after sheriff's deputies detained him during a reported assault Tuesday evening on Hillsdale Boulevard, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the 5400 block of Hillsdale Boulevard at about 5:30 p.m. on November 3. The Sheriff's Office says the man became unresponsive shortly after being handcuffed, and deputies began lifesaving efforts.

Fire personnel continued those efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office. The man was not identified in the release, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division will investigate the in-custody death, which the agency described as standard practice. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will conduct an independent review.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. No further details about the reported assault or the circumstances of the detention were released.

In-custody deaths are investigated by the Sheriff's Office as a matter of routine, with the coroner and the District Attorney's Office providing independent determinations on cause of death and whether any criminal conduct occurred.
