Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment have cast Maya Hawke in their upcoming live-action feature film based on Hasbro's massively successful 'Magic: The Gathering' franchise, with the 'Stranger Things' star becoming the first actor to join the project.
Deadline first reported the news. Hawke is expected to play a key role in the film, which is being developed as an ensemble piece, and she was given the first offer to join the film, without having to audition for the part.
The companies have tapped Matt Johnson, director of 'BlackBerry' and 'Nirvanna the Band the Show,' to direct the film. Johnson is also attached to write the script alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, the writers of 'Calls.'
The film and a television series based on the 33-year-old trading card game were both originally announced in February 2025. The script was then developed by Gardner and Fitzgerald, with Johnson coming aboard as director about eight months later and revising the script.
Hawke will next be seen onscreen in Lionsgate's 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,' Graham Parkes' romantic comedy 'Wishful Thinking' and Netflix's original series 'God of the Woods.' Her other credits include 'Stranger Things,' Disney and Pixar's 'Inside Out 2,' Wes Anderson's 'Asteroid City,' 'Do Revenge' and Bradley Cooper's 'Maestro.' No release date has been announced for the 'Magic: The Gathering' film.
