Johnny Depp has addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's upcoming 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6,' noting he would return under the condition of giving the franchise a proper farewell.
'If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the 'Pirates' franchise... the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,' Depp said during a press tour for his holiday film 'Ebenezer,' speaking to Entertainment Tonight.
The Oscar-nominated actor explained that his decision ultimately hinges on his longstanding working relationship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. 'I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn't matter... if it's Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.'
Bruckheimer has previously noted that screenwriter Jeff Nathanson has been developing a new script for a sixth installment, which aims to follow the five-film saga that grossed $4.5 billion worldwide between 2003 and 2017. At D23 in August, Bruckheimer told Deadline, 'We're talking with Johnny [Depp], we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.'
Depp stopped short of confirming a deal, and no official cast or release date has been announced by Disney. His upcoming slate also includes Lionsgate's thriller 'Day Drinker,' scheduled for 2028.
