Fact-Checking Key Claims from the 2024 VP Debate

VP Debate 2024, Tim Walz and JD Vance engaged in a heated debate about immigration, foreign policy, and taxes in the vice presidential contest of 2024. Both candidates made audacious statements. Vance made one of the more noteworthy claims, stating that there were between 20 and 25 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. The majority of trustworthy sources, such as the Office of Homeland Security and the Pew Research Center, estimate the number to be closer to 11 million, therefore fact-checkers discovered that this figure was inflated.

Walz’s assertion that Project 2025, a conservative policy initiative, including a pregnancy register was another significant point of contention. This is untrue. A government pregnancy registry is not mentioned in Project 2025, despite the fact that it calls for more stringent reporting on abortion statistics. Additionally, Vance asserted—a statistic that is untrue—that the Biden administration had unfrozen $100 billion for Iran. The true sum, which was made available under agreements restricting its use to humanitarian causes, is more like $16 billion.

Finally, Walz said Donald Trump hadn’t paid federal taxes in 15 years, later correcting himself to say Trump didn’t pay taxes in his final year as president. The corrected claim is accurate, as records show Trump did not pay federal income tax in 2020, although he did pay taxes in other years, including 2015 and 2018.
