Kirsten Gillibrand melts down over ‘mean’ Pete Hegseth when he emphasizes need for merit-based standards in military

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand clashed with Pete Hegseth during his confirmation hearing, calling him out for his past comments on women in the military. Hegseth had previously stated that women shouldn’t be in combat roles, and Gillibrand slammed these remarks as “brutal,” “mean,” and “hurtful” to serving military personnel.

Gillibrand specifically took issue with Hegseth’s comment that “Dads push us to take risks. Moms put the training wheels on our bikes. We need moms. But not in the military, especially in combat units.” She implied that Hegseth is sexist and needs to change his attitude towards women to perform his job well.

Hegseth defended his stance, emphasizing the importance of merit-based standards in the military. He argued that standards have been compromised and quotas for female soldiers have been implemented in some cases. However, Gillibrand disputed this claim, asserting that quotas for women in military units do not exist.

The exchange highlighted the tension between Gillibrand’s advocacy for gender equality in the military and Hegseth’s emphasis on merit-based standards.
