Former President Donald Trump is facing backlash for falsely linking President Biden’s immigration policy to a recent mass shooting in New Orleans. Despite the shooter being a US-born citizen and Army veteran, Trump claimed on social media that Biden’s “open border policy” enabled the attack.
The shooting, which occurred on New Year’s Day, left at least 14 people dead and dozens injured. However, investigators have found no connection between the shooter, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, and immigration or border policies.
The FBI has concluded that Jabbar acted alone, and authorities are still working to determine his motives. Nevertheless, Trump and some Republican lawmakers have continued to spread misinformation about the attack.
Experts have repeatedly debunked the notion that immigrants are more prone to crime. In fact, studies have shown that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than US-born citizens.
Trump’s comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing him of exploiting the tragedy to push his anti-immigration agenda.
