Erling Haaland faces a late decision on whether he will feature in Manchester City’s clash with Brentford this weekend, following the loss of a deeply cherished family friend.

Ivar Eggja, who was the best man at Alf-Inge Haaland’s wedding, held a special place in Erling’s life, with the footballer affectionately calling him “uncle.” Eggja, who passed away at the age of 59, was not just a friend but an integral part of Haaland’s inner circle, forming a profound personal bond with the Manchester City forward.

Haaland took to social media to express his grief, sharing a series of images alongside Eggja, and writing: “You are a legend, Ivar. Words fall short in describing how much you meant to me and how deeply you will be missed. Thank you for everything, you wild spirit. We will meet again. Rest in peace, Ivar.”

Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, also offered a heartfelt tribute. “From the moment I met you, I felt your ability to light up any space. I had no idea it was a superpower, that you would endure so much, so soon, with an unyielding strength, dignity, and optimism that family and friends could only dream of. It was an honor to be a small part of your incredible journey.”

Despite the heavy emotional toll, Haaland was seen training with the team as usual on Thursday. However, ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola commented on the situation: “It has been a difficult time for him and his family. It’s sad news. Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones. We will assess tomorrow whether he’s mentally and physically ready to play.”
