New Jersey Commuting Chaos: Accidents and Train Delays Wreak Havoc

Massive delays caused by accidents and train malfunctions made for a frustrating morning for commuters in New Jersey. At roughly 10:00 a.m., train service to Penn Station New York was halted because of power issues in the Hudson River Tunnels. Though restored within 30 minutes, the delays added to an already stressful commute.

On the roads, multiple accidents near the Lincoln Tunnel created severe traffic jams. A motorcycle crash at 4:00 a.m. in the center tube halted outbound traffic for hours. Traffic was made worse by the rerouting of incoming cars. Major collisions involving flipped automobiles and ambulances caused Route 3 in East Rutherford to close in both directions.

Travel times stretched significantly, with some drivers reporting up to four-hour trips that usually took under 30 minutes. NJ Transit cross-honored bus tickets and rerouted services, but delays of up to 60 minutes persisted.

This chaotic morning underscored the vulnerability of New Jersey’s aging infrastructure and highlighted the need for investment and better crisis management.
