India denies Canada’s allegations, After finding out that its ambassador and other diplomats were included as “persons of interest” in the Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder probe, India vehemently denied Canada’s allegations. The accusations, which were sent by Canada through a diplomatic note, were characterized by India as “preposterous” and a component of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “political agenda.”

Nijjar was shot and killed in June 2023 outside a Sikh temple in British Columbia. Nijjar was a strong supporter of the Khalistan movement, which aims to create a distinct Sikh homeland. Based on intelligence, Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada earlier charged India with involvement in the murder and referred to it as a breach of Canadian sovereignty. India has continuously refuted the allegations as baseless and denied any involvement.

The diplomatic dispute has deteriorated the relationship between the two nations, as India has demanded that Canadian diplomats leave the country and that visa services be discontinued. India stated that it reserved the right to take more action in response to the most recent claims, but it did not say what actions would come next. Delhi further defended Sanjay Kumar Verma, its High Commissioner, labelling the accusations against him “ludicrous.”

Although Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly recently warned of the possibility of more violence similar to the killing of Nijjar on Canadian soil, Canadian authorities have not yet responded to India’s most recent remarks, indicating that relations between the two countries are still tight.
