Athlete Set Alight by Former Boyfriend
Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has succumbed to her injuries after being brutally set alight by her former boyfriend in Kenya. The horrific incident occurred on Sunday, leaving Cheptegei with severe burns that ultimately claimed her life.
Motives Behind the Attack
According to authorities, Cheptegei was attacked outside her home in north-west Kenya, where she lived and trained, after returning from church with her two daughters. The motive behind the attack is believed to be a dispute over a piece of land, which the couple had been arguing over.
Condemnation and Calls for Justice
Cheptegei’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through the athletic community, with Uganda’s athletics federation condemning the act of domestic violence and calling for justice. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” they said in a statement.
Growing Concerns of Violence Against Female Athletes
The incident highlights the growing concern of violence against female athletes in Kenya, with Cheptegei being the third to be killed since October 2021. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, has appealed to the Kenyan government to ensure justice is served for his daughter’s senseless murder.

The suspect, Cheptegei’s former boyfriend, is currently in intensive care with less severe burns and is reported to be in a stable condition.
