Examining the most significant unlawful voter claim made by the Trump campaign

Trump Illegal Voter Claim, There is little evidence to support Donald Trump‘s campaign’s assertion that millions of “illegal” immigrants may cast ballots in the next election, and it is primarily based on a contentious study. A 2014 article that looked at data from the Cooperative Election Study (CES), a poll that isn’t intended to make generalizations about unlawful voting, is where the figure of 2.7 million non-citizens casting ballots in U.S. elections came from.

There has been much debate over the original paper’s estimate of the number of non-citizen voters, which ranged from about 38,000 to almost 2.8 million. There is a significant chance of inaccuracies or misreporting because the CES poll, which was employed in the study, only included a very tiny percentage of respondents who identified as non-citizens. CES’s creators have denied the study’s findings, stating that it is hard to generalize the results because to the limited number of non-citizens in the sample.

Experts have expressed skepticism, but pro-Trump forces have consistently invoked the 2.7 million figure. The conservative organization Just Facts resurrected the issue in a blog post from May 2024, saying that 1 million to 2.7 million non-citizens might cast ballots. Elon Musk and others took notice of this figure, which went viral on the internet. The former president’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, rallied supporters with the statistic in emails.

There is, however, little actual proof that non-citizens cast unlawful ballots. There have been relatively few instances of non-citizens voting unlawfully, according to data from groups like the right-wing Heritage Foundation and state-level investigations. In Ohio, for instance, out of eight million registered voters, only about 600 were unable to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

In summary, the assertion that millions of “illegal” immigrants will cast ballots in the 2024 election is wildly inflated and devoid of any solid proof, even if non-citizens may register and vote in tiny numbers.
