A horrific scene unfolded in the Bronx on Monday when two gunmen opened fire on a group of people outside a convenience store, injuring six innocent bystanders, including a 12-year-old girl and her mother.
According to police, the shooters targeted a group standing outside the store on White Plains Road, but their reckless gunfire also struck unsuspecting customers inside the store. The mother, 40, was shot in the stomach when one of the intended targets used her as a human shield, police said.
Interim Chief of Department John Chell condemned the “brazen and heartless attack on innocent New Yorkers” and described the scene as “cowardly.” Police are reviewing video footage that shows the attackers firing indiscriminately as they ran across the road to the store.
The victims, aside from the mother, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to their arms or legs. The injured included four men aged 18 to 21, and the 12-year-old girl. Authorities are still searching for the perpetrators and a motive behind the senseless violence.
As the investigation continues, the community is left reeling from the shocking incident, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
