Trump’s $3.3 Trillion Tax Plan Moves Forward
Senate Advances Trump Tax Mega-Bill, Despite dire warnings from the Congressional Budget Office, Senate Republicans moved ahead with President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, advancing the legislation in a narrow 51–49 vote. The bill is projected to add $3.3 trillion to the U.S. debt over the next decade.
Split GOP and Senate Tension
Republican Senators Rand Paul and Thom Tillis opposed the bill, citing fiscal and Medicaid concerns. Paul objected to a $5 trillion increase in the federal borrowing limit, while Tillis accused Trump’s advisers of hiding cuts to Medicaid.
“This will haunt us,” said Tillis, who also announced he won’t seek re-election after Trump threatened a primary challenge.
Democrats Slam ‘Accounting Gimmicks’
Democrats, including Senator Mark Warner, called the bill a threat to health coverage. Warner predicted 16 million people could lose insurance under the changes. Democrats also blasted Republicans for using “fake math” to hide the bill’s cost.
Senator Schumer stalled debate by demanding a full reading of the bill on the Senate floor, delaying votes for over 15 hours.
CBO vs. GOP: Dueling Numbers
While the CBO estimates the bill’s cost at $3.3 trillion, Senate Republicans reject that number, relying on an alternative model that omits the cost of extending Trump’s tax cuts. That method paints a rosier picture, claiming $500 billion in savings, a claim experts say is misleading.
Next Steps and Deadline Pressure
If passed by the Senate, the bill must return to the House for final approval. Trump is pushing for it to become law before July 4, touting it as an economic miracle. However, Congress must soon tackle the debt ceiling or risk default.
