Over 100 Arrested in Los Angeles Protests as Mayor Karen Bass Slams Trump Administration

More than 100 people were arrested on Monday night in Los Angeles as protests against immigration enforcement operations turned violent. Mayor Karen Bass condemned the Trump administration for stoking unrest and called for an end to the immigration raids.

The protests, which entered their fourth consecutive day, were sparked by widespread anger over arrests made by federal immigration officers. Authorities claim those detained include undocumented migrants and gang members. Bass stated that the majority of those arrested were detained for unlawful assembly.

Protests and Arrests

The Los Angeles Police Department declared downtown Los Angeles an unlawful assembly area on Sunday, ordering protesters to go home. Despite this, violent demonstrations continued, with reports of fireworks being set off, tear gas being deployed, and clashes between protesters and law enforcement. At least 20 arrests were made on Sunday, including individuals facing charges for assaulting officers.

Mayor’s Response

Bass has been vocal about her opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, calling the raids “terror tactics” and “unnecessary and provocative acts.” She urged protesters to remain peaceful and called for an end to the immigration raids, stating that they are “creating fear and chaos in our city.” Bass also faced criticism and calls for her arrest from some who believe she did not do enough to control the situation.

Controversy Over LAPD’s Response

Leaked reports suggest that Bass ordered the LAPD to stand down during the riots, blocking aid to federal officers. This decision has been criticized by some who believe it put federal personnel at risk. However, Bass’s supporters argue that she was trying to prevent further escalation and protect the city’s communities.

Ongoing Tensions

The situation in Los Angeles remains tense, with ongoing protests and clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators. The Trump administration has deployed 2,000 National Guard troops to the city, which Bass has criticized as an “escalation”.
