Harris pursues Latino and Black voters while polls indicate Trump’s surge

Harris targets Black Latino voters, Kamala Harris is reaching out to more Black and Latino voters as the US presidential election approaches. Even though she is far ahead of these categories, new surveys indicate that Donald Trump is gaining ground, especially with Black men. According to a New York Times/Siena poll, Harris has 78% of Black voters’ support, down from the 90% that Democrats had previously won.

Black and Latino voters are more concerned about economic issues, specifically inflation and the cost of living. Some have shifted to support Trump, claiming improved economic situations under his leadership, such as Quenton Jordan of Virginia. Lydia Dominguez and other Latino voters in Nevada are also beginning to second-guess their Democratic support as they recall the economic stability that came under Trump.

Controlling immigration and borders is also essential. The US-Mexico border, which Trump has made a major campaign issue, has angered some Black and Latino voters who feel that the Biden administration has handled it poorly. Rolando Rodriguez, a voter from Texas, called the border situation a catastrophe, while Jordan thinks resources intended for the Black community are being diverted to asylum seekers.

A role is also being played by social concerns, such as perspectives on gender, religion, and masculinity. Voters who identify as black men in particular feel disenfranchised from the Democratic Party’s position on these issues. Voters who identify more with the GOP’s conservative and religious values include former police officer Clarence Pauling.

Harris is reacting with focused efforts, such as gatherings with Black business owners and a “opportunity agenda for Black men.” To encourage voter turnout, she is also interacting with well-known Black media personalities. In the meantime, Trump is praising his polling results and bragging about how much more support he is receiving from Black and Latino voters.
