The US confirmed a human case of bird flu in Missouri with no known animal exposure.

This is the first case of bird flu in 2023 where the source of infection is unclear.

The patient has recovered, marking the 14th reported US bird flu case this year.

Previous bird flu cases typically involved contact with infected animals, such as poultry.

The Missouri case is puzzling, as the patient had no direct contact with animals.

The patient tested positive for avian influenza on August 22, 2023.

Initially, the patient's test showed influenza A, but further testing revealed bird flu.

Health officials are unsure how the virus was contracted but haven't ruled out undetected animal exposure.

Bird flu is spreading among birds and some mammals in the US, as well as globally.

The CDC is sequencing the virus to understand how it infects humans.

Global monitoring continues, with public health officials on alert for signs of a wider outbreak.
