Newsom Mocks Trump After Misidentified Bird Photo Used to Attack Wind Energy

California Governor Gavin Newsom has once again taken aim at President Donald Trump, this time after the president shared a misleading social media post claiming wind turbines are killing America’s national bird, the bald eagle.

On Tuesday, President Trump posted an image to Truth Social showing a dead bird lying on the ground near several wind turbines. Alongside the image, Trump wrote that “windmills are killing all of our beautiful Bald Eagles,” renewing his long-standing criticism of wind energy.

However, multiple media outlets quickly pointed out that the bird shown in the photo is not a bald eagle, but a falcon. Further investigation revealed that the image was taken in Israel in 2017, years before Trump shared it, and had previously appeared in Israeli publications including Haaretz and The Times of Israel.

Reacting to the post, Newsom’s press office mocked the president on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

“Dozy Don doesn’t know what America’s bird looks like???”

The post quickly gained attention, continuing Newsom’s pattern of publicly ridiculing Trump online. The California governor has openly said that he uses satire and sharp responses to counter what he views as misinformation and extreme rhetoric coming from the White House. In a previous interview, Newsom described his approach as “holding up a mirror to the absurdity” of modern American politics.

Trump’s opposition to wind energy is not new. His criticism dates back to at least 2012, when he unsuccessfully fought against the construction of wind turbines near his golf course in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Since returning to office for a second term, Trump’s administration has intensified its efforts against renewable energy projects.

According to recent reports, federal regulators under Trump have moved to revoke permits for multiple offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast and halted construction on others. Trump has repeatedly argued that wind turbines are too expensive, unreliable, and harmful to the environment.

While addressing the United Nations General Assembly in September, Trump dismissed renewable energy altogether, calling wind power “a joke” and claiming it cannot support the energy demands of a strong economy.

The incident has reignited debate over misinformation, renewable energy policy, and the increasingly personal nature of political discourse between Democratic leaders and the Trump administration.
