U.S. President Donald Trump has said he may send Tomahawk long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine, signaling a potential major shift in Washington’s military support for Kyiv. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Israel, Trump said, “We’ll see… I may,” when asked about the possibility. Read More
The comment came shortly after Trump’s second phone call in recent weeks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been urging the U.S. to bolster Ukraine’s military with stronger offensive weapons. The two leaders reportedly discussed Ukraine’s need for advanced air defense systems and long-range capabilities to strike Russian targets beyond the front lines.
Tomahawk missiles, which can travel up to 2,500 kilometers (about 1,500 miles), would give Ukraine the ability to hit deep inside Russian territory — even reaching Moscow. Such a move, however, risks provoking a sharp reaction from the Kremlin.
Moscow has repeatedly warned Washington against supplying Kyiv with long-range missiles, calling it a direct provocation that could escalate the war and damage U.S.-Russia relations.
Trump told reporters he might also raise the issue with Moscow, saying, “I might tell them that if the war isn’t settled soon, we may very well — or may not — send them. Do they want Tomahawks going their way? I don’t think so.”
Ukraine has faced months of heavy Russian missile and drone attacks, with strikes focusing on its energy infrastructure and major cities like Kyiv. Power outages and destruction of civilian facilities have become routine as Russia intensifies its campaign.
Last month, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, hinted that the U.S. president had already authorized operations targeting Russian positions deep inside its territory, stating on Fox News that “there are no sanctuaries” in this war.
Despite the possible shift, Russia has dismissed the idea that Tomahawk deliveries would alter the outcome of the conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “Whether it’s Tomahawks or other missiles, they won’t change the dynamic.”
