Trump Gains Netanyahu’s Backing for Gaza Peace Plan, But Hamas Response Uncertain

President Donald Trump announced Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to support a U.S.-brokered plan aimed at ending the nearly two-year war in Gaza. Read More

The development, unveiled at a joint White House press conference, was described by Trump as a major step toward peace. Still, serious doubts remain over whether Hamas, the key player in the conflict, will accept the proposal.

Trump said the two leaders were “beyond very close” to finalizing an agreement but cautioned that Israel would have America’s full backing if Hamas rejected the terms. The White House also released a 20-point framework, which includes a ceasefire, the exchange of hostages and prisoners, a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Hamas’ disarmament, and the creation of a transitional authority overseen by an international body.

Netanyahu praised the plan alongside Trump, declaring that it achieved Israel’s central war goals. He highlighted that the framework promises the return of Israeli hostages, the dismantling of Hamas’ military infrastructure, the end of its political rule in Gaza, and long-term security for Israel.

However, the absence of Hamas in the discussions cast a shadow over the announcement. The group, which initiated the conflict with its October 2023 attack on Israel, still holds dozens of hostages, with Israel estimating 48 remain in captivity, including 20 believed to be alive. A Hamas official told Reuters the group has not yet received the plan formally and has only seen details through media reports.

This was Netanyahu’s fourth visit to the White House since Trump’s return to office earlier this year. For the Israeli leader, the trip was also about reinforcing ties with Washington at a time when a growing number of Western nations have recognized Palestinian statehood, a move strongly opposed by both the U.S. and Israel.

For Trump, the proposal represents the latest effort in his long-promised bid to deliver peace in the region. During his 2024 campaign, he vowed to swiftly end the conflict, but earlier attempts to reach a deal have repeatedly stalled. Whether this new plan succeeds will largely depend on Hamas’ willingness to engage—a decision that could determine if the war finally moves toward resolution or if the bloodshed continues.
