Trump calls judge evil, After releasing more than 1,800 pages of evidence in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s election plot case against him, Donald Trump referred to US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan as “the most evil person”. As the Republican nominee for president, Trump charged Judge Chutkan with “election interference” when the judge turned down his request to postpone the distribution of the material until after the election.
Legal experts have debated whether this release violates a Department of Justice guideline discouraging investigative actions that could influence an election within 60 days of voting. Judge Chutkan countered that this may also be interpreted as election meddling, saying that “if the court withheld information that the public otherwise had a right to access…that withholding could itself constitute…election interference.”
The released documents, mostly redacted, include transcripts from the January 6 House committee, parts of former Vice President Mike Pence’s autobiography, and other public information.
The evidence pertains to Trump’s prosecution for allegedly planning to stage a coup in 2020 in order to reverse his election loss, which resulted in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.During a podcast with right-wing pundit Dan Bongino, Trump disparaged Special Counsel Smith and Judge Chutkan, labeling Smith as “a sick puppy.” In addition, he questioned why the detainees from the Capitol Riot were still being held, drawing comparisons between their treatment and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
Trump is accused in the case of breaking laws both as a private citizen and while in office. It is unclear if this case will get to trial because, should Trump win reelection, it is anticipated that the prosecution will cease. In addition to being convicted on 34 felony counts in New York pertaining to a hush-money payment, he is also facing many other criminal proceedings.
