On Monday, a shootout occurred inside an apartment building lobby in Northeast Washington, resulting in the injury of three Washington D.C. police officers and the death of a suspect. According to Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, the officers were hospitalized and in good condition.
The incident began with a 911 call reporting a man firing a gun inside the lobby of the i5 Union Market apartment building, located in the 300 block of Florida Avenue NE, near Union Market and the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station. When officers arrived, the man ran into an elevator and later returned to the lobby, where he struggled with police. During the altercation, the man fired a gun, striking three officers. At least one officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect, an adult male, died at the scene. As of 7:30 a.m. on Monday, police had not identified the suspect or determined whether he lived at the apartment building or why he was there. Police Chief Smith stated that video surveillance footage suggested the man was familiar with the building.
The three officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure. Police Chief Smith described the incident as isolated and expressed gratitude that the officers survived. After meeting with reporters, Smith said she was headed to the hospital to meet with the wounded officers. “We are so grateful they survived this unfortunate incident,” she said.
The i5 Union Market apartment complex is a luxury building with amenities such as Peloton bikes in the gym, an infinity pool on the roof, and a fireside lounge. The area surrounding the apartment building is bustling, with several restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues nearby.
