A new wildfire, dubbed the Hurst Fire, has broken out in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, marking the third blaze to hit the area in recent days.
The fire was first reported shortly after 10 p.m. local time behind the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Flames quickly spread, charring approximately 100 acres of brush and prompting evacuation orders for nearby residents.
California Highway Patrol officers at the scene described the fire’s rapid progression, stating that an entire mountainside appeared to be engulfed in flames.
Firefighters are currently battling the blaze, working to contain the spread of the fire and protect surrounding communities. The cause of the Hurst Fire is currently unknown.
The outbreak of the Hurst Fire comes as the region is already reeling from two other wildfires, including the devastating Pacific Palisades fire that forced thousands to evacuate.
