Mike Pence Criticizes Trump’s Trade Policies, Talks Iran, Middle East Peace, and Putin

July 10, 2025 – Washington, D.C.
In a wide-ranging interview with Bloomberg Surveillance, former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence offered candid remarks on key global and domestic issues, including a sharp critique of former President Donald Trump’s trade policies and the direction of U.S. monetary policy.

Pence, who served as vice president under Trump from 2017 to 2021, distanced himself from one of the administration’s hallmark economic strategies: tariffs. “I think it will ultimately harm the American economy and harm the American consumer,” he said, referring to the Trump-era tariffs that fueled a trade war with China and other key partners.

Pence also voiced continued dissatisfaction with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, criticizing his approach to inflation and interest rate policy. While he stopped short of calling for Powell’s resignation, Pence suggested that the Fed’s actions have not aligned with the economic realities facing average Americans.

On foreign policy, Pence addressed the recent U.S. missile strike against Iran, calling it “a necessary response to protect American lives and interests.” He emphasized the importance of projecting strength in the region while urging caution to avoid escalating tensions further.

Regarding Middle East peace, Pence expressed cautious optimism, citing new diplomatic efforts under the current administration. He acknowledged ongoing challenges but argued that a stable, peaceful Middle East remains within reach with strong American leadership.

Pence also weighed in on the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing the need for a firm stance against Russian aggression. He urged deeper engagement with allies and strategic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the conflict.

Throughout the interview, Pence positioned himself as a voice of traditional conservatism, advocating for free trade, strong national defense, and principled diplomacy—sometimes at odds with the policies of his former running mate.

The remarks come amid speculation about Pence’s future political ambitions, as he continues to carve out an identity separate from Trump’s more combative and populist legacy.
