Melanie Watson Bernhardt, best known for playing Kathy Gordon on the classic 80s sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes,” passed away Friday in Colorado Springs. Her brother Robert confirmed the news.

Melanie, born with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), was hospitalized for severe bleeding complications.

She deteriorated quickly, but Robert says she “was fortunate to live as long as she did” with the condition, praising her resilience.

Fans remember Melanie from 4 episodes of “Diff’rent Strokes” (1978-1986), including a memorable 1982 episode named after her character, “Kathy.” In it, her character cl clashed with Arnold (Gary Coleman) when he urged her to walk without crutches.

Post-show, she retired from acting, later marrying Roger Bernhardt (1994-1996). Melanie also co-founded Train Rite, a charity training service dogs for people with disabilities.
