Luka Doncic Drops 49 as Lakers Dominate Timberwolves in Revenge Win

Luka Doncic put on a dazzling performance Friday night, scoring 49 points — 32 of them in the first half — to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a commanding 128-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The win served as payback for last season’s playoff elimination at the hands of Minnesota. Read More

Doncic, who also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists, shot an impressive 14-of-23 from the field (60.9%) and connected on five of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc. The 49-point effort marked his highest-scoring game since joining the Lakers.

Austin Reaves contributed 25 points and 11 assists, Rui Hachimura added 23, and Deandre Ayton chipped in 15 as the Lakers shot a scorching 59.2% from the field compared to Minnesota’s 46.6%.

Doncic flirted with a 50-point game but fell just short, missing one of two free throws with just over three minutes left before checking out for good.

For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards led with 31 points, while Julius Randle recorded 26 points and nine rebounds. Donte DiVincenzo added 13 and Jaden McDaniels had 10 as Minnesota concluded its two-game road trip at 1–1.

The Timberwolves started strong, taking a 40–36 lead after the first quarter behind Edwards’ 14 points. Doncic responded in dominant fashion, scoring 23 in the opening frame to keep the Lakers close despite missing LeBron James (sciatica) and big men Maxi Kleber (abdomen) and Jaxson Hayes (knee).

Los Angeles surged ahead late in the second quarter, closing the half on a 14–4 run to take a 68–63 lead. The Lakers then blew the game open in the third, using a 13–6 burst capped by a driving layup from Reaves to extend their lead to double digits, 97–86. They entered the final period ahead 108–94 and never looked back.

With the win, the Lakers improved to 1–1 on the young season, while Minnesota now turns its focus to Sunday’s home opener against the Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers.
