Europe is in a vulnerable position as time is running out for Biden

Europe’s military vulnerability, As his administration draws to a close in January, US President Joe Biden’s quick trip to Germany on Friday demonstrated his ongoing aspirations for a global role, particularly with regard to the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. In stark contrast to former President Donald Trump’s strategy, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier gave Biden the nation’s highest accolade during his visit, recognizing his efforts to strengthen European military.

Biden emphasized the need for sustained support for Ukraine: “We must keep going until Ukraine wins a just and durable peace.” Since the United States is Ukraine’s top military supplier, a substantial portion of Europe’s defense depends on American assistance, which could change significantly following the elections in November. Even if Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, prevails, attention can be diverted to other international issues like China and Taiwan. Given his past fondness for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his ambiguous position on Ukraine’s success, Trump’s possible return might put pressure on NATO.

After Russia invaded Germany in 2022, Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to restructure the armed forces, but bureaucracy has impeded efforts. Scholz is under pressure due to impending elections and local political issues, particularly in light of German intelligence’s warnings that Russia’s escalating military might could pose a threat to NATO by the end of the decade.

Key NATO partners, the UK, France, and Germany, met with President Biden on Friday to reiterate their commitment to Ukraine, but President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is still pushing for more tangible help, such as an invitation to join NATO and greater military assistance.

As Biden’s term comes to an end, Europe’s military situation is still unstable, with Ukraine—which is still at odds with Russia—in dire need of additional support. Opponents contend that Biden and NATO’s cautious stance could postpone vital assistance, making Europe and Ukraine vulnerable in the coming months.
