Ethel Kennedy passes away, Robert F. Kennedy‘s widow and human rights activist Ethel Kennedy passed today at the age of 96, according to her family. She suffered a stroke on Wednesday and passed away. As the matriarch of the Kennedy political family, Ethel spent her entire life actively engaged in social justice activism. Joe Kennedy, her grandson, posted a poignant statement on social media to announce her departure.

When her husband was shot and killed in 1968 while running for the Democratic presidential nomination, Ethel was by his side. President John F. Kennedy, her brother-in-law, had been killed five years prior.

A family statement described Ethel as a “devout Catholic” and expressed comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband, Robert, and several other family members. She leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

Born in 1928 in Chicago, Ethel grew up in Connecticut, where she met Robert Kennedy at 17. They married in 1950 and were actively involved in John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign before Robert launched his own political career.

Following Robert’s assassination, Ethel founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights foundation in his honor, becoming a prominent figure in the fight for human rights. The foundation paid tribute to her legacy, describing her as a “champion for justice” and a “political force” in her own right.

Ethel Kennedy’s impactful life was dedicated to defending human rights around the world. The foundation concluded their tribute with, “May she rest in eternal peace.”
