In a heartfelt tribute, Dai Jones Tribute S4C and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show are celebrating one of Wales’ most illustrious broadcasters. Today, in honor of the late Dai Jones, the S4C building at the Royal Welsh Showground will be renamed ‘Corlan Dai Llanilar,’ which translates to ‘Dai Llanilar’s sheep pen.’
The day’s events will commence with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at 10:45 am, followed by a special tribute ceremony at 11 am. During the reception, Y Lolfa publisher will present ‘Cofio Dai’ (Remembering Dai), a poignant collection of essays edited by Beti Griffiths. A close friend of Dai’s and his widow Olwen, Beti painstakingly collected thoughts from others who knew him well to provide a thorough memorial.
At the age of 78, Dai Jones—who was a renowned singer and farmer—passed away in March 2022. Despite his reputation as a famous radio and television personality, his contribution to the presentation of the ‘Cefn Gwlad’ series is what has left a lasting legacy.
The plaque, a commissioned work by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, features an englyn—a traditional Welsh poetic form—by poet Tudur Dylan Jones. It honors Dai with the title ‘Farmer, Broadcaster, Countryman.’
Sioned Wiliam, S4C’s Interim Chief Executive, remarked, “Renaming the S4C building to ‘Corlan Dai Llanilar’ was a natural and fitting decision. Dai Jones was a towering figure in Welsh broadcasting, whose passion for the Welsh language, culture, and countryside was truly inspiring. We are delighted to commemorate him in such a significant manner, ensuring that future generations can learn from and be inspired by his remarkable legacy.”
Aled Rhys Jones, Chief Executive of the Royal Welsh Show, added, “Dai often expressed that his highest honor was being elected President of the Association. This year, it is our honor to unveil a permanent tribute to one of our nation’s most esteemed figures.”
