Australian republic decision, The Australian people will determine whether the nation stays a constitutional monarchy or becomes a republic, according to King Charles’s repeated statements. Officials at Buckingham Palace reacted to a letter from the Australian Republic Movement ahead of his visit to Australia next week, saying that the continuation of the monarchy in Australia is “a matter for the Australian public to decide.”
The letter made clear that King Charles follows the counsel of his ministers and upholds the status quo without proposing any new laws. The King and Queen’s “deep love and affection” for Australia was also mentioned.
In a 1999 referendum, Australians decided to keep their constitutional monarchy in place.
Even though the present Australian government claims that holding another referendum is “not a priority,” proponents of a republic nevertheless contend that Australians, not the British monarch, should select the country’s head of state.Isaac Jeffrey of the Australian Republic Movement commended King Charles as an individual but stressed that “a republic is about us, not about him or his family.”
King Charles’ visit to Australia, from 18 to 26 October, will be his biggest trip since his cancer diagnosis earlier this year. The visit will include events in Sydney and Canberra, supporting environmental projects, and meeting cancer experts. Afterward, the King will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Samoa.
