In a message shared through his brother Nick Sanchez, the family said this has been “a deeply distressing time” and thanked fans and friends for their outpouring of support.
“Mark is still under medical care for the injuries he suffered and is now focusing on recovery as the legal process moves forward,” the statement read. “We’re very grateful to the first responders and medical staff for their quick action and compassion.”
What Happened
According to Indianapolis police, the 38-year-old ex-New York Jets quarterback was involved in a violent confrontation with a 69-year-old grease truck driver early Saturday morning near Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery in downtown Indianapolis.
Investigators say the two men argued over a parking space after Sanchez became frustrated that the truck was blocking a loading area. Surveillance video reportedly shows Sanchez approaching the driver’s door and trying to speak to him, but the man couldn’t hear well because he wasn’t wearing his hearing aids.
Moments later, the situation escalated into a fight. Police reports claim Sanchez shoved the man and threw him to the ground, leading the driver to defend himself. The man first used pepper spray, and when that didn’t stop Sanchez, he pulled a knife and stabbed him multiple times in the upper torso.
Sanchez was seen stumbling away from the alley, clutching his wounds, before being rushed to the hospital. Officials later confirmed he was in stable condition.
Legal Fallout
Sanchez was initially charged with three misdemeanors — battery causing injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle — and released on a $300 cash bond.
However, prosecutors have since upgraded one of the counts to a felony, citing the extent of the victim’s injuries. The new charge — battery causing serious bodily injury — carries a possible one-to-six-year prison sentence under Indiana law.
The Marion County Prosecutor, Ryan Mears, called the altercation “an unnecessary fight about a parking spot” and confirmed that Sanchez’s next court hearing has been moved to November 4.
Meanwhile, the truck driver has filed a civil lawsuit against Sanchez, claiming he was permanently disfigured during the incident and accusing Fox Sports, where Sanchez works as a broadcaster, of negligence.
