Massie says he won’t vote for Johnson: ‘You can pull all my fingernails out’

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said on Wednesday that he will not vote for House Majority Leader Mike Johnson (R-La.) to become the next Speaker.

“I’m not voting for Mike Johnson,” Massie told reporters. “You can pull all my fingernails out. You can shove bamboo up in them. You can start cutting off my fingers. I am not voting for Mike Johnson.”

Massie’s opposition to Johnson is significant, as Republicans can only afford to lose a handful of votes in their conference if they want to elect Johnson as Speaker.

The Kentucky Republican has been critical of Johnson’s leadership style and his handling of a continuing resolution to fund the government last month.

Massie also criticized Johnson for supporting a $113 billion aid package to Ukraine and for reauthorizing a domestic spying program.

President-elect Donald Trump has endorsed Johnson for Speaker, but Massie said that endorsement would not change his vote.

“I don’t think that’s going to move the needle for me,” Massie said.
